Sacred Memories of Iona

by Rev. Lynell M. Caudillo

Today's piece is a guest blog post written by Pastor Lynell. She is one of the three leaders travelling to Iona in 2027. You can see more details about the trip and sign up for information sessions or reserve your tickets by seeing Events.

The brilliant shades of the sunset were fading, disappearing near the horizon.

Simultaneously stars were silently appearing, showing off in the clear, dark sky above.

We walked slowly up the small rise, joining other pilgrims on our way to evening worship. As we entered through the large wooden doors, voices grew quiet.

Worshippers were seated on benches parallel to the walls, on both sides of the center aisle, facing one another. Soon it was standing room only! The evening vespers service was about to begin!

In the restored Abbey, candles flickered. The sound of a single guitar echoed, calling us to worship.

I found myself deeply moved, realizing that these worshippers represented seekers and the faithful from every continent on the globe. Individuals from all walks of life, women and men, mature and young, singing in diverse languages, shaped by our unique cultures were present. What did we have in common? Each one of us, God’s beloved!

Together as we sang God’s praises, it was evident that only the Holy Spirit could make us one in Christ.

I do not recall the scripture text or the content of the message that night. What I recall most keenly is the sense of unity in Christ that I experienced – it was to me, a foretaste of heaven.

This evening is still vivid in my mind, though it was over a decade ago, on

my first visit to Iona. I hope that it might inspire you to consider joining us for what will be an unforgettable adventure, spiritual and otherwise!

Lynell is also a fiber artist. You may recognize her quilt designs from the photos she shared.
